LEED Gold R-2000 Home: Elliott Residence and Soap Bubble Greenhouse

Winner of EnerQuality Green Renovation Project of the Year 2016, this owner-built rural project located in McDonalds Corners can be a single family home, duplex with rental unit, or a residence with commercial kitchen and public space for “unintentional community”. This retrofit/addition of a 600 SF 1930s farmhouse is Certified LEED® for Homes Gold, GreenHouse, R-2000 and ENERGY STAR, and demonstrates that the owners of Homesol Building Solutions do indeed “walk the talk” and live by example.

A high-efficiency Tarm wood boiler with a water-to-water geothermal backup in the adjacent strawbale outbuilding provides heat to a 3500 liter thermal storage tank, which is then distributed throughout both buildings via radiant floor and wall panels. The renewable carbon-neutral biofuel for the boiler is sourced free on-site from the 5-acre maple sugarbush, contributing 48% of the home’s projected total annual energy consumption of 23.7 MJ/m2.

The environmentally-preferable materials for the building were chosen due to their beauty, durability, fire resistance and low maintenance. The curved walls of the café use true R-40 ICFs for ease of installation, mass and continuous insulation, while other walls employ advanced framing with FSC certified wood and 5/8” firecode drywall for mass throughout. The existing house and side addition were clad with cement board siding, while the café’s walls have a granite facing that was sourced within 800 kms from the site. Metal roofing was chosen as a long lasting material that is fully recyclable at the end of its lifespan, with unvented soffits for enhanced fire safety. Year-round organic permaculture food production is provided in the gardens, orchard and adjacent 1500 SF soap bubble insulated and shaded greenhouse.

First Net-Zero Ready Neighbour in Ottawa

Right near the Experimental Farm in Carlington, is Ottawa’s first Net-Zero home development project by RND Construction. In this new development, nine homes were built (3 singles, 6 semis) above and beyond the code for homes in Canada, making them extremely energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, and Net-Zero ready. The addition of solar panels will make them true Net-Zero.

These homes have received several labels and certifications including EnerGuide, ESNH, R-2000, and are all Net-Zero ready. All the homes heating and cooling systems are managed by energy-efficient air-source Dettson heat pumps, and the AeroBarrier was completed by Airtight Home Technologies. This is the first net-zero ready community in the Ottawa area.

One of Canada’s first Net-Zero Communities

In Westport Ontario, is Canada’s first net-zero community being built by Land Ark Homes. Homesol is Land Ark’s net-zero energy advisor. We’ve been helping Landark since the inception of this community. We’ve been consulting with them on the performance aspects and the building science aspects of designing the house from insulation levels to airtightness details to mechanical specs.

Below are the specs for the model above that is completely net-zero thanks to solar panels installed on the roof. But each homes’ numbers rate very similarly as they are designed with net-zero energy loss in mind. Every home in the community will be built to be solar-ready so once sold the homeowner’s have the ability to easily add a solar panel system on the roof to live in a complete net-zero home.

Canadian Passive House: Grey Residence

Ottawa, Ontario

The Grey Residence

Passive House by The Conscious Builder

Casey Grey, the Founder of The Conscious Builder designed his home to be with Christ Straka from Vert Design and had the air-tightness testing and labelling provided by Homesol Building Solutions. This absolutely beautiful home is a fully passive house has Themotec windows installed making the winters warm and the summers cool.

The house is also very air tight, with an ACH of just 0.54. It includes a Mitsubishi Air-Source Heat Pump, which is partial powered by the 10 KW solar panel system on the roof (installed after pictures were taken) meaning there is no need for a gas line to the house. This house is a staple of everything that The Conscious Builder stands by, to be energy efficient and environmentally friendly, and our reporting proved just that.

Oakville Building

Large Commercial Office

38,000 Square Foot Building With 0.6o ACH

Our team performed an Air Tightness Test on a large commercial building in Oakville, Ontario built by Pearce McCluskey Architects. The building itself is over 38,000 square feet, or 3,500+ square metres on 2 levels. The result was a very impressive 0.60 ACH! A credit to the project team’s attention to detail.

Our team of Energy Advisors (EA) set up 4 sets of blower door equipment at the front of the building in anticipation of a higher ACH result. The building was so tight it only required 2 of the 4 fans to achieve the depressurization needed for the test. The airtightness testing was overseen by our Ontario Assistant Regional Manager, David Hope with assistance from EAs Liana Di Ilio, Mike MacKay and Michael Lagimodiere.
