Stephen is passionate about energy efficient, sustainable, and affordable construction and renovation. He graduated in 2008 as valedictorian from Algonquin College’s 2-year Construction Carpentry – Advanced Housing program at its Heritage Institute in Perth, ON, then worked as a carpenter for an award winning, green-minded construction and renovation company serving the Ottawa area for 2 years before joining Homesol in December, 2010.
Stephen is Homesol’s top energy modeller, with extensive experience in using 3D software for volume and area take-offs. He is a Certified Energy Advisor (CEA) for ENERGY STAR, EnerGuide, R-2000 and Zero Energy Homes, including Multi-Unit buildings, and has evaluated over 1,600 new and existing homes for NRCan’s new and existing homes programs. Stephen is also qualified as a Green Rater for LEED for Homes and Mid-Rise, and a Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC – both Germany & the US).
In addition to Stephen’s extensive experience as a CEA using HOT2K, he is a skilled Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) and WUFI-Passive hygrothermal modeller. He has been involved in over 20 Passive House projects and also co-authored a research project for the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) comparing eleven SuperEE and eQuilibrium houses with Passive House in 2011, and is completing a similar study for Natural Resources Canada this year.
In 2014, Stephen presented a Passive House project, of which he was the lead consultant, at both the North American Passive House (NAPH) and the North American Passive House Network (NAPHN) conferences, and presented at the 2015 NAPH conference about another Passive House project he was the lead consultant on, as well delivered a workshop on the evolving Canadian modeling software and new EnerGuide Rating System .
Continuing education is one of Stephen’s main focuses, including attending the 2014, 2015 and 2016 Building Science Experts retreats held by the Building Science Corporation. He regularly attends training and conferences throughout North America to advance his housing knowledge.
He was recognized as the best residential energy consultant in Ontario in 2016 with EnerQuality’s Evaluator of the Year Award, for excellence in professional practice and exceptional service to builders. He’s also a permaculture student, fire-spinner, expat Australian, and lives with his wife and two girls in Orléans, east of Ottawa, Ontario.
