Ross established Homesol with his partner Kathryn in 1999 to help owners, builders and designers to create energy efficient and environmentally sustainable homes. He provides energy conservation design, green building consulting and training services to clients throughout North America.
He was licensed as an Energy Auditor in Maine in 1980, and licensed as a Carpenter in 1983. He spent two decades as a builder and renovator of energy-efficient, earth-friendly homes, including some of Canada’s earliest R-2000 houses.
Ross is a Registered Energy Advisor (REA) for ENERGY STAR, EnerGuide, R-2000 and Net Zero Homes, and since he certified the first ENERGY STAR home in Canada in 2005, more than 20,000 new and existing homes have been labeled and quality assured through Homesol under his direction.
He was the recipient of EnerQuality Evaluator of the Year award in 2007 and again in 2011 in recognition of excellence in professional practice and exceptional service to builders, and the EnerQuality Hall of Fame award in 2014 for lifetime achievement in making a lasting impact on energy efficiency and green building.
In addition to Ross’s 17 years of experience as a CEA / REA, he is also a LEED for Homes and Mid-Rise Quality Assurance Designate and Green Rater, an EnerGuide Rating Service Quality Assurance Specialist, a Certified Passive House Consultant (Germany & US), a LEED-Accredited Professional (Building Design & Construction), a PHIUS+ HERS Rater, trained PHIUS Certified Builder, and a qualified Residential Air Systems & Radiant Hydronic Design Technician (RASDT / RHDT) with an Ontario BCIN Designer designation.
Ross is a Founding Member of the Canadian Association of Consulting Energy Advisors, Passive Buildings Canada, the Canadian Residential Energy Services Network and the Global Passive Buildings Council. He is currently a Director of the Ontario Natural Building Coalition and is a past Director of EnerQuality Corporation (2005 – 2011). Ross is an active member of the Canadian Homebuilders Association, and is on their Net Zero Homes and Retrofits technical committees.
He has provided research and training for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Natural Resources Canada, National Research Council, M’Chigeeng First Nation, MoCreebec Eeyoud and Ontario First Nations Technical Services, and has presented at events including both North American Passive House Conferences, Affordable Comfort, Building Science Spring Training Camp and GreenBuild. He studied Science at Concordia University.
Homesol Building Solutions Inc. under Ross’s management has been granted licenses and contracts to deliver Enbridge Home Energy Conservation Program assessments in Ontario, Efficiency Nova Scotia new and existing home energy programs, EnerGuide Ratings and Reports, ENERGY STAR, R-2000, LEED, Net Zero and Passive House certifications, and to provide energy design verification for Ontario and National building codes.
